Advertisement page passes with flying colours

Marktplaats.nl is a classified advertising site based in the Netherlands. It was acquired by eBay in 2004, but is maintained as a seperate brand. Marktplaats is the biggest and most succesful classifieds site in the Netherlands.

Marktplaats.nl comprehensively changed the layout of its advertisement page at the end of August 2009. Marktplaats.nl, undoubtedly one of the most successful sites in the Netherlands, takes user researches extremely seriously, and rightly so, because small changes can have major consequences with 6.5 million visitors (per month). A drastic change in the advertising pages is therefore extremely risky.

Measuring gives the information

In collaboration with valsplat, Marktplaats has carried out extensive research prior to the launch of the new advertisement page. Over a longer period, the new design of the advertisement page was repeatedly tested in usability tests. After each test, the design is adjusted on the basis of the recommendations from valsplat and presented to the users once more. Eventually this procedure has led to a design that is completely in line with the desires and requirements of the Marktplaats visitors. This collaboration between valsplat and Marktplaats is already bearing fruit!

Objectives reached. Comprehensively

The objective of Marktplaats with this project was to improve the user experience of the advertising page dramatically. This has succeeded:

  • 65% prefers the new advertising page to the old one.
  • The amount of e-mail queries and offers placed have both risen by 25%.
  • There are 85% more recommendations submitted about those offering services.

The collaboration between Marktplaats and valsplat

Marktplaats has made an agreement with valsplat. Each quarter, a usability test will be carried out in which the current site and the new designs are tested. In addition to these fixed time periods, ad hoc tests will also take place.
