The Anne Frank House Online in 3D
Since April 2010, everyone can access the Anne Frank House Online and experience the life of Anne Frank with images and sounds, entirely in 3D; this is certainly no 'ordinary' site. Therefore it was important to know to what extent people can easily use this.
Two usability tests
Valsplat therefore performed two usability tests, together with design agency LBi Lost Boys and the Anne Frank Foundation:
- Firstly, with a prototype. Here the understanding of the concept was the primary point of focus: do people understand what can be done and how it works? We also looked at the movement within a space and to the use of images and sounds to tell the story.
- Tests were run later with an more interactive version where the test participants could actually move through the whole house to research the navigation and orientation.
Based on the results of the usability researches the interaction and navigation within the 3D environment have been improved further, in order to ensure that everyone naturally moves through the online hiding place and is moved by the story of Anne Frank.
Moving
Ita Amahorseija, ICT Program Manager of the Anne Frank Foundation: 'The tests were a very moving experience. You can almost feel every sigh and hesitation of the user, but you can also see remarkably positive reactions.'
International appreciation
In May 2011 the Anne Frank House Online was awarded the prestigious Webby Award in the Cultural Institutions category.
